Spain are world champions after defeating defending champions Argentina 1–0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at New York New Jersey Stadium.
The match remained scoreless through 90 minutes before substitute Ferran Torres broke the deadlock in the 106th minute. Nico Williams headed Pedro Porro’s cross into Torres’s path and the forward finished first time.
Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez kept his team in the contest with a World Cup final-record 12 saves, but Spain’s control and pressure eventually produced the decisive moment.
A second star for Spain
The victory gives Spain its second men’s World Cup title, following the 2010 triumph in South Africa. Argentina had hoped to win consecutive tournaments after lifting the trophy in Qatar in 2022.
The 2026 tournament was the first 48-team men’s World Cup and was hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States. The final was played on 19 July in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Spain’s win confirmed a remarkable international cycle after the country’s European title two years earlier. For Argentina, it was a narrow end to an attempt to defend the crown.
